A New Smile
Few situations are more embarrassing than when dentures slip in public. Nearly one-third of people between the ages of 65-74 have no natural teeth; we call the condition of having no teeth “Edentulism”, or being “edentulous”. Dentures allow this group of people to consume a healthy diet, feel confident in their image, and enunciate their words properly, significantly improving quality of life.
However, because traditional dentures are held in place by natural suction or denture adhesive, they often slip, wobble, or slide around in the mouth. This movement can make dentures bothersome and uncomfortable. Today, edentulous patients have an alternative to loose dentures: implant-retained dentures.
What are Implant-Retained Dentures?
Instead of relying on suction or adhesive, dentures can be secured with multiple dental implants.
Four to six implants, strategically placed in the jaw can hold a full denture in place. Attached to implants, dentures cannot slip, slide, wobble, or dislodge.
What’s Involved in Implant Placement?
After a thorough examination and consultation with implant specialist Dr. Murray-Curtis, it is not uncommon to require gum disease treatment or bone grafting in preparation for implant placement, which can both be easily treated in our clinic.
Once your oral health is in prime condition for implant surgery, Dr. Murray-Curtis will implant four to six implants into your jaw. Over three to six months, your bone will fuse to the implants, creating a stable foundation similar to that of healthy teeth roots. You may wear a temporary denture during this healing phase. When the implants are optimally secure, Dr. Murray-Curtis will attach your permanent denture.
Are There Options with Implant Dentures?
Dental implants can be permanent or removable, and they come in full and partial varieties. Depending on your preferences, you may opt for a more highly cosmetic denture, made from top-quality esthetic porcelain.
Dr. Murray-Curtis will discuss your ideas and lifestyle, then present the most appropriate type and style of implant dentures for your case.
What are the Benefits of Implant Dentures?
Compared to traditional dentures, implant-retained dentures present many benefits.

- No more slipping dentures
- No more denture adhesive
